I/O Benchmarking

Some cloud computing vendors provide very little information regarding the underlying architecture of their services. To add to the fun, those systems and hardware will change over time.

While changes should be transparent to the end user (and presumably an improvement over whatever was there before), this means that performance metrics gathered today could differ greatly from any gathered in the past or the future. Finally, resources are awarded competitively, so if your virtual neighbor is placing heavy demand on I/O channel or storage arrays, that could have an impact on your throughput.

Put simply, it's a dynamic environment, which makes it really important to monitor:

• Overall I/O channel availability
• Read & write throughput
• Read & write latency
• Any first read or first Write penalties
• I/O performance over time
